Day 145, ~140 remaining

Saturday, September 14, 2013
Leg 26: Stevens Pass to Rainey Pass, Washington

Tomorrow our hikers reach Rainey Pass, where the entire Flanagan family (less Becca*) will meet them, whisk them away for a zero in Winthrop, and return them to the trail Tuesday morning.  And we mean all the Flanagans: Gil & Karen, Aunt Ginny (from England), Aunt Nano, Party & Emily with Hugo & baby Bode.

"But they're so close, why so now?" you ask.  The hikers are taking a zero at this point to push their finish date to Friday, September 20, allowing friends and family to meet them in Manning Provincial Park.  A couple days in British Columbia gently re-entering society before returning to Seattle and real life.

* Becca departs l later today for two weeks in France with close family friends.  An adventure more her speed, she will walk through her ancestral church (g-g-g...grandfather was baptized in 1644), visit the WWII memorials in Normandy, and explore small towns in the French countryside.  With Becca away, photos of the big finish are delayed until early October.

Good luck and God's speed to our hikers.  Thank you for reading along this summer.  And thus we bid adieu.

Day 141, less than 200 miles remaining

Tuesday, September 10, 2013
Layover between Legs 25 &26: Stevens Pass, (Highway 2), Washington

All is well on trail.  Our hikers are a mere TEN DAYS from ending the journey!  Leg 26 to Rainey Pass is 123.5 miles and leg 27 is about 67 miles into Manning Park.

Today the Mathes parents delivered the food cache to Stevens Pass, along with dinner for the boys, and chocolate chip cookies for Flanagan.  (Mathes doesn't like cookies; to much like cake.)  They are sleeping on a gravel patch at an RV park just off Highway 2.

The call tonight is the last conversation for Becca and Flanagan until well after Andrew finishes the hike.  This Saturday Becca departs for two weeks in France with girlfriend and family.  Quite suiting for this couple that one grand adventure overlaps another!

Day 133, mile 2303

Monday, September 2, 2013
Leg... I lost count

Layover at White Pass on Highway 12

Becca meet Red at White Pass ski area.  Quick snack before heading into Packwood (Diva caught a ride down earlier in the day) for showers, laundry (fingers crossed), and a hot meal not out of a netbook jet boil.

Cache drops are necessary for supplying the next leg's food.  But cache drops are even better for the delicious food brought to the drop.  Today Red gets homemade chocolate chip cookies from his mom and the boys are sharing fresh zucchini bread also from Mama Flanagan.   Becca provided (via Safeway) Greek yogurt, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, tortilla chips, hummus, Ninkasi beers, orange juice, and bananas.  Yum!

Before dealing with packs, Becca and our hikers shared a few beers and onion rings at Blue Spruce Tavern with Seminole and Dinnertime (& his girl Rebecca).

Change of plans . . .

Boys were convinced to take a near-o in Packwood.  They're splitting a hotel room with
Seminole and getting a ride back to the trail  from Dinnertime in the morning.  Here's to   showers and laundry, made better by their being separate events.

Day 122, mile 2107

Thursday, August 22, 2013
Layover between legs 21 and 22: Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood, Oregon
Overnighting: on trail just past Timberline
Friends on Trail: Mike "Beezy" Bascus and Chris "Wheezy" Wheeler

Welcome back on trail, Beezy & Wheezy!

Leg 22 is more of a walk to earn a weekend off trail than an actual leg.  A mere 45 miles after Timberline Lodge's white tablecloth, all-you can eat lunch buffet (today) is the siren of the Columbia Gorge, beer from Walking Man Brewery in Stevenson (dinner tomorrow).

Becca is headed to Timberline this morning to meet our hikers, shuttle Beezy and Wheezy to the trail, deliver resupply for the the party of four, and collect unneeded gear from the thru-hikers (e.g., cookpot, tent, heavy sleeping back.

[pictures to come after we see the hikers]

As Beezy just realized, these two "poachers" will have hiked the PCT in all three states.  They each hiked a leg in California -- Beezy's Leg 9 (Independence to Reds Meadow) and Wheezy's Leg 15 (Mount Shasta City to Etna) -- and this leg takes them from Oregon, across Bridge of the Gods, and three miles into Washington.

Day 118, mile 2015

Sunday, August 18, 2013
Layover between legs 20 and 21: Santiam Pass on Highway 20, Oregon
Overnighting: On trail
Milestone: passed 2,000 miles this morning

Flanagan reports all is well in Oregon.  Somms finished up his leg with the Andrews this morning, when the Sommarstrom parents delivered the next cache drop and collected Somms from the trail.

All is on schedule to dine at Timberline Lodge Thursday afternoon -- there is a white-tablecloth, all-you-can-eat buffet at the Lodge -- before Beezy rejoins our hikers for another epic day on trail.  This time, the boys are hiking 40+ miles in about 24 hours from Timberline Lodge to Walking Man Brewery in Stephenson, Washington.

Expected arrival time of 6pm (Flanagan) and 8pm (Beezy) at Walking Man allows for a couple hours of shenanigans before the brewery closes at 8pm.  All are welcome to join.

I'm hoping for a photo of "2000" in pine cones or rocks...

Day 113 from Command Central

Monday, August 13, 2013

Mom and I had a great time supporting our Andrews yesterday as they completed a 30-mile dry section of trail.  Today was a thoroughly enjoyable 9-hour drive home.  Mind you, Google says the drive is a mere 5-hours, but we know how to have fun!

We had a lazy morning and departed Chemult about 10:30am.

Our first of many stops of the day was for breakfast.  We stopped at Thrist Coffee in downtown Bend.  We enjoyed a latte and deliciouc breakfast roll (think croissant dough shaped like a sticky roll with cardamom in the swirls and sugar on top).

Day 112, mile ?

Monday, August 12, 2013
Leg __: Crater Lake to Willamette Pass, Oregon

Boys summit Mt. Theilson at 8:30am.

Becca and Maurine drive home and Racoon explores Oregon off trail.  Stop in Bend for breakfast.  Sisters for a photo op with Raccoon.  Yay for Santiam Pass.  Sweet Home was Becca's sweet home for early childhood.  Corvallis for a stop at Sigma Kappa.  And back to Portland.

Day 111, mile 1850

Sunday, August 11, 2013
Leg 19: Crater Lake to Willamette Pass, Oregon
Waypoints: Crater Lake overlook and Highway 138 crossing

Oh, the joys of fully supported hiking!  During this 30-mile dry stretch, Becca and Maurine met our hikers twice with water, food, and resupplies as well as carrying non-essentials for the day.

Our thru-hikers broke camp and hiked about 5 miles before we met for breakfast.  On the way to meeting Maurine and Becca, they hiked up to the fire watch tower (and highly recommended the hike to the ladies).  Just as planned the Andrews met their personal trail angels near the intersection of Rim Road and North Entrance Road to enjoy lots of not-frequently-seen-on-trail snacks such as Greek yogurt, a gallon of Odwalla orange juice, whole canteloupe, chocolate milk, and homemade zucchini bread.

Maurine, Flanagan, Becca, and Mathes (back)

After breakfast, we part ways for four hours.  While the boys hiked the twelve mile from the rim, down the mountainside, across the pumice desert, and up into the pine forest, Becca and Maurine drove around Crater Lake.  Well, not just a drive around Crater Lake; the ladies did the loop stopping at many of the turn-outs and reading the "readables" (signs with information about the view, history, science of the lake, etc.), checked out the meeting spot for lunch, drove back to "town" for chips & salsa and ice cream, and then returned to the meeting spot just north of Highway 138.

Becca & Maurine (Mo)

A long lazy lunch at the splotchy sunny campground entailed lots of eating, repacking food for the remainder of this leg, and maps on the sun.  That time with our boys was great.  Spending time recanting stories of the trail while lying under pines and watching clouds skirt by was absolute bliss!

Once the boys were ready to return to trail, Becca and Maurine decided to walk a mile or so with them.  A few minutes down the trail a white tent was spotted -- Pokey and Principessa made camp for the night a quarter mile from the parking lot.  P&P were offered them the remaining loaf of homemade zucchini bread upon Becca and Maurine's return to their car.  (Oh, who are we kidding, we offered them any and all the fresh food remaining.)

Our foursome walked about a mile down the PCT to the Forest Service Road.  It's always hard to say goodbye when Flanagan returns to the trail, but there are only eleven days until Becca and Andrew re-unite at Timberline Lodge.

As Maurine and Becca passed Principessa and Pokey and invited them back for a "Pauper's Feast" at the picnic table, Fun Size walked by on trail.  He was invited back to the parking lot to enjoy the feast and refill his water.  (The next water source wasn't for another nine miles, so this was a great relief to Fun Size.)  While these three thru-hikers feasted on the remaining beer, fruit, veggies, goldfish crackers, brie, triscuits, cookies, and orange juice, many stories were shared from the trail and from "Command Central."  Lots of discussion regarding logistics of the hike -- Red & Dufresne having lots of support with Becca packing boxes and helping coordinate deliveries, Pokey and Principessa packed their own boxes before departing and Pokey's mom mails them each week, and Fun Size is flying solo on this trail purchasing food at towns along the trail.  Overall, Principessa, Pokey, and Fun Size were amazed to know all the efforts happening behind the scenes to support Red and Dufresne, especially since the pair are so easy going on trail.  You, too, can follow these new trail friends at http://pctbolo.wordpress.com (the ladies) and http://gradyspcthike.weebly.com (Fun Size).  Lots of eating, sharing stories, and general good times. Becca got a trail name: Support Goddess!  (Not "Trail Goddess" because Becca didn't want other's to expect the same level of support that Red and Dufresne received.)

Principessa, Support Goddess, Pokey, and Fun Size (sitting)

Day 110, mile 1833

Saturday, August 1, 2013
Layover between Legs 18 and 19: Mazama Village at Crater Lake
Overnighting: near Rim Village

Cache delivery by Becca and Maurine (Flanagan's wife and mother-in-law).  The road trip that wouldn't end.  Google said 5 hours and it took nearly 8!  Check out this crazy hail storm taken about 30 minutes from meeting up with the guys.

[INSERT VIDEO HERE]

We met up with the boys at the Village, shared good food, caught up on stories, and "exploded" their packs in preparation of a fully supported day of hiking.  Back to the trail head for dinner and kicking around a soccer ball.  And then they were off... with super light packs because the food and water is only for tonight and tomorrow morning and superfluous items (e.g., cook stove, sandals) are in the car.

Mom and I had support tasks tonight: laundry and gear repair.  First we taped up a split stuff sack for their tent.

Then we started laundry.  The socks were amazingly dusty.  Here are the socks after the first rinse . . .

. . . the sixth rinse . . .

. . .  the 25+ rinse . . .

. . . and were calling it good.  (Maurine is a saint to hand wash each off the six socks until water ran clear!)  After socks, Mo moved on to repairing the torn sleeping bag liner while I continued with the hand washing.  Nearly 90 minutes of stitching by Mo secured a foot and a half tear in the silk liner.  The shirt, shorts, and briefs were dirty, but not nearly as photo worthy as the socks.

Day 105, mile 1727

Tuesday, July 30, 2013
Layover between legs 17 and 18: Ashland, Oregon
Overnighting: Cowan Home (friends of Mathes family)

Welcome to Oregon!

Our hikers made it safely to Ashland this afternoon.  After waiting near I-5 for the Cowan family (long time friends of the Mathes family), they filled their bellies with Mexican food.  I'm told they both ordered wet-burritos -- yum!

Flanagan waiting near I-5

Becca was treated to an hour long call with Flanagan tonight.  Lots of logistics worked out . . . and it appears we're squared away for all of Oregon.  For the curious minds, here's what the schedule looks like for the next couple weeks:

  • 8/5 depart Ashland
  • 8/10 arrive Mazaman Villiage near Crater Lake
    • afternoon of eating with Becca and Maurine
  • 8/11 walk 30 mile waterless stretch of trail fully supported by the lovely ladies
    • mid-morning water & food delivery
    • mid-afternoon water & food deliver
  • 8/12 continue to Willamette Pass unsupported
  • 8/14 resupply at Willamette Pass, meet Sommarstrom family
    • Chris joins the Andrews on trail
  • 8/18 resupply at Santiam pass
    • many thanks to Sommarstrom parents for sticking around southern Oregon for a couple days to deliver this food cache!
  • 8/22 arrive at Mt. Hood
    • Quick early dinner with friends before getting in a couple more miles
    • 4-6pm BBQ in Government Camp -- all are welcome to join!
  • 8/24 arrive at Walking Man Brewery in Stevenson, Washington
    • ha ha, get it?  They're "walking" to Walking Man?!  We're so pun-ny!
    • 1-4pm drinks and pizza at Walking Man Brewery -- again all are welcome to join!
    • Mathes to stay in the Gorge for kite surfing with friends.  Flanagan to head into Portland for a weekend at home.  Sommarstrom finishes his PCT adventure.
Phew!  I'm exhausted just thinking about all the miles in the next three weeks.  And, really, before this grand adventure, who would have thought "three weeks" was the answer to "how long does it take to walk across Oregon?"

Leg __: Etna, California, to Ashland, Oregon

Nearly to Oregon!

Here's the view just after our hikers climbed our of Seiad Valley, California.

Day 100, mile 1606

Tuesday, July 30, 2013
Layover between legs 15 and 16: Etna, California
Friends on trail: Chris Wheeler (aka Wheezy)

Last stop in California!

Flanagan, Mathes, and Wheezy finished leg 15 about lunch time and grabbed a bit at the Etna Brewery.  Wheezy will deliver our thru-hikers to the trailhead this afternoon for the push to Ashland.

Thursday, July 25, 2013

Day 94, mile 1506

Thursday, July 25, 2013
Mt. Shasta City, California
Friends in trail: Chris Wheeler, aka Wheezy

Departed town for the trailhad at 4:30pm.  Wheezy's beautiful wife, Aki, is delivering the three boys to the trail.

I spoke with Red very briefly this afternoon.  Just long enough to (1) learn that all the food is in order, (2) inform him that new sites and insoles will be waiting in Etna next Tuesday, and (3) wish him a happy fifth anniversary.

Day 89, mile 1423

Saturday, July 20, 2013
Burney Falls State Park, California

Candy and Rich Mathes delivered another cache box to the trail.  Candy sent a couple photos home.

Day 78 from Command Central

When the Andrews were hiking through the dessert, they leap-frogged Spot (aka Greg Howe) a couple of times.  Spot is from Portland, has been hiking the PCT in sections, and this summer was his last segment of the PCT.

Evidently, our boys and Spot ran low on topics of conversation and the fact that I recently sat for and passed my second bar examwas shared.  Fast forward to early June, Spot came off trail to recover from an injury, and returned to the trail to finish this segment north to south opposite the normal flow.  This gave Spot the chance to pass all his previous trail friends as they hiked north.

Well, you know where this is going.  Spot passed our boys just after they returned to the trail post San Francisco.  A few minutes of chatting and all hiked on.  Skip ahead another couple weeks and Spot finds me on the Oregon State Bar member directory.  (He's a lawyer, too, so it's not creepy.)  Tonight Spot and I had a good chat as I updated him on the trail news.  We're hoping to meet up this fall after Andrew finishes the trail.

Day 76, mile 1125ish

Sunday, July 7, 2013
Legs 11: Sonora Pass to Highway 80 (Donner Pass), California
Milestone: over halfway complete for days on trail

The Andrews are a day away from their next cache drop -- a mailed package waiting in Truckee -- and found 4G reception atop a ridge.  Not a bad location to stop and call their ladies.  The view from Squaw Peak, a ski resort on the north side of Lake Tahoe, is spectacular.

Lake Tahoe

There is a fire raging southeast of Lake Tahoe.  You can see the white smoke plume as well as the long grey soot trail the winds are pushing north.  These are the only "clouds" in the sky today.

Smoke clouds beyond Lake Tahoe

Wondering where the wildfires are in relation to our hikers?  Remember to check Jonno's incredible map at http://www.backnine.org/~jnicol/pct_map/map.html.

The boys are still enjoying each other's company, their gear is in working order, and the food is hitting the spot.  A requested changes to future cache drops, but those food swaps will be easy enough.  So glad they doing well.  Post a comment or question below and I'll be sure to pass it along to them.

Day 73

Thursday, July 4, 2013
Leg 11: Sonora Pass to Highway 80 (near Truckee), California

Another cyber spotting of our Andrews on Muk Muk's blog:
http://mexicotocanada2013.wordpress.com/2013/07/07/the-4th-of-july/

This time Muk Muk not only mentions "The Andrews" in passing, but they are featured in a video!  I slipped a couple packets of Pop Rocks -- yes, the delicious candy all the children of the 1980s will remember fondly -- into the last cache drop.

So great to actually SEE our boys.  Perhaps more videos will come along . . .

Monday, July 1, 2013

Day 70, mile 1018

Monday, July 1, 2013
Layover between Legs 10 & 11: Sonora Pass, California
Overnighting: Bridgeport, Mono County, California

Cache drop delivered by Flanagan parents who drive down from Seattle.  Sometimes a mom just needs to see her boy.  Staying in a hotel tonight, and each Andrew gets his own queen-sized bed!

Crossed the 1,000 mile mark yesterday.  Only 700 miles remaining in California.  They will be picking up the pace the next few legs add they only have five weeks until Oregon.  Yes you're mental math is correct, the remainder of California will be hiked at an average of 124 miles each week or 18 miles per day (21 miles per day of you figure six days on & one day off).

June is high mosquito season.  But add in multiple  breathtaking alpine lakes (and the swampy terrain that surrounds the lakes) and you have a recipe for miserable swarms.  At one point Red was walking about eight feet behind Mathes and the mosquitos were so thick a haze formed between them.  Uck!  They are combating the bugs with head nets that for over a hat, long sleeves and pants, and DEET on all exposed skin.  Still getting bites, but not becoming anemic.

Lots of family and friends support these next couple weeks as well.  As mentioned above, the Flanagan parents delivered the cache for Leg 11.  Leg 12 was mailed today.  The Mathes parents will deliver cache drops for Legs 13 and 14.  Wheezy brings Leg 15 resupply with him when he joins, and Aki delivers Leg 16 box when Wheezy departs.  Then two drops from the Cowan family and were in Ashland, Oregon!  Rebecca and get mother are delivering the food for Leg 19 at Crater Lake just six weeks from today!

Day 66, mile 943

Thursday, June 27, 2013
Leg 10: Reds Meadow to Sonora (via Half Dome), California
Overnighting: Tuolumne Meadow, California

An exhausting three days for Red and Dufresne, but so worth the views and additional adventure stories (as if this trek needed additional adventures).  In the last 58 hours, the boys have hiked over 70 miles and gained 1000s of feet of elevation.

Becca is learning to use technology for good (as opposed to the usual evil uses), and created this nifty map to show everyone the "shortcut" the Andrews found... just a quick jaunt up Half Dome.  Figured out how to insert the map; did not figure out how to insert a well-centered, zoomed out map.  :-\

          A = start of Day 64 (Tuesday 6/25/2013)
          B = end of Day 64 & start of Day 65 (Wednesday 6/25/2013)
          C = end of Day 65 & start of Day 66 (today)
D = waypoint: summit Half Dome
          E = end of Day 66

And here are a couple photos Mathes posted in the B9 hangout.

Yet another meandering river

Flanagan looks forward to the hotel room in Bridgeport Monday night.  The rest of this leg is (relatively easy) with 20 mile days and only 10 miles on Monday.

Day 63, mile 840+

Monday, June 24, 2013
Leg 10: Red's Meadow (near Mammoth) to Sonora Pass, California
Overnighting: ??? (somewhere after Muir Pass)
Friend on trail: Beezy

Second cyber-spotting.  First appearance in the written word of another Thru Hiker.

Muir Pass -- Red, Other Andrew, Muk Muk, UB
(assuming Beezy took this photo with Muk Muk's camera)

If you're tracking their progress using Jonno's online map or Halfmile's PDF maps, here's how to find them:
  • JONNO: find the pinpoint for Independence, follow the trail (red line) north until you see the first purple tangent running east.  Zoom in as far as you can to that red-purple fork, then follow the red trail, which heads north, west, and then hook south past Helen Lake.  Our boys hiked right pass this lake as they went up and over Muir Pass (mile 838.6) is just southwest of Helen Lake.
  • HALFMILE: open California Section H, page 12, right-hand side
Links to both maps are available within my April post, Map of Pacific Crest Trail.  Happy tracking!

Leg 9: Independence to Reds Meadow, California
Overnighting: Mammoth, California
Friend on trail: Beezy
Text messages from "Red" to Becca:

11:38am: In mammoth. Love you!

Our boys and Beezy left the trail at Reds Meadow and are overnighting in Mammoth.  Beezy finishes his leg of the PCT.  Red and Dufresne (aka Flanagan and Mathes) return to the trail tomorrow morning, skipping the planned zero day.  They want to spend an extra day or two this next leg to play in Yosemite and summit Half Dome.

Day 48, zero week

Sunday, June 9, 2013
Layover between Legs 7 & 8: Kennedy Meadows, California
Overnighting: Healdsburg, Sonoma Valley, California

What every PCT hiker needs -- a zero week in San Francisco!

Sunday the B9 crew met at the cabin in Forestville for lunch: brauts, brews, cards, and many laughs.  After lunch Dufresne headed back to San Francisco with Beezy, Andy, and Nichole.

Red remained at the cabin with Nat, Dru, and Becca, and they spent the afternoon near the water -- Red floated the Russian River with Nat while Becca and Dru read books on the river bank.

Sunday evening Flanagan and Becca returned to the city to celebrate their five-year wedding anniversary.  The celebration was a few weeks earlier than the July 26th anniversary, but Becca wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to see Andrew!

Day 47, zero week

Saturday, June 8, 2013
Layover between Legs 7 & 8: Kennedy Meadows, California
Overnighting: Healdsburg, Sonoma Valley, California

What every PCT hiker needs -- a zero week in San Francisco!

Saturday was spent in Sonoma Valley celebrating the union of Akiko Fujii and Chris Wheeler.  Many congratulations on their splendid wedding festivities!

Poolside after the wedding: Nat, Dru, Mathes, Flanagan & Becca

Dru is the genius that called bowties for B9 crew.  Glad I could help the boys and tie them up before the ceremony.

Red cleans up rather well . . . and enjoys the occasional mint julep

Looking good, Dufresne!

Day 43, mile 702

Tuesday, June 4, 2013
End of Legs 7:
 Kennedy Meadows, California

Received confirmation that the Andrews met up with Dru and Nat this morning.  The four guys are headed to Bishop, California, today and into San Francisco tomorrow.

This weekend is the wedding of a childhood friend.  A great excuse to come off trail for a week, and the first time Flanagan and Becca will see each other in 50 days!

With time off-trail and a laptop, we're hopeful lots of pictures and trail notes will be added to this site.

Day 41, mile 698 & 702

Sunday, June 2, 2013
Leg 7: Highway 58 to Kennedy Meadows, California
Overnighting: South Fork Kern River (Red) & Kennedy Meadows (Dufresne)

Mathes finished his epic challenge, hiking over 50 miles in 18 hours.  While he recouped with a trail angel in Kennedy Meadows, Flanagan finished the trek from Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows at the regular pace of 20-25 miles per day.

Day 40, 676 & 702 (crazy adventures on trail)

Saturday, June 1, 2013
Leg 7:
Highway 58 to Kennedy Meadows, California

Overnighting: off trail at saddle (Red) & Kennedy Meadows (Dufresne)

Walker Pass trail angels brought ice cream sandwiches and a relative feast for hikers.  Feeling good, a few hikers dreamed up the "Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows 24-Hour Challenge."  That's 52.5 miles of hiking in under 24 hours!  Mathes took the challenge, and Flanagan carried much of the "extra" gear to allow the lightest possible pack for Mathes.

Five hikers took the challenge.  Mathes started about 5am, assuming the other four would catch up to him half-way through the day.  The team of hikers never caught Mathes, who finished in about 18 hours.

One of the four hikers -- UB --created an amazing 4-minute video of The Challenge (http://vimeo.com/67612312).  A few highlights from the video are typed below.

...The Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows 24 Hour Challenge...
Start at 7am
The Challenge is 52.5 Miles in under 24 hours
3 climbs, over 6,969 elevation, and one of the driest sections on the PCT
Our first water stop took us over 90 minutes to get enough water to push on
The first climb -- one hiker down, three remain
6pm reached Fox Springs without water
Spent an hour refueling at the springs before the last 19 miles
Averaging 3+ miles an hour
Sun setting over the first views of the Sierras and six hours to go
1:28am challenge completed = 18h 28m

Day 39, mile 651

Friday, May 31, 2013
Leg 7:
Highway 58 to Kennedy Meadows, California

Overnighting: Walker Pass campground
Waypoint: Walker Pass

Oh, Technology, our co-dependent love-hate relationship continues.  I love that you deliver messages from the trail.  I hate that you deliver them on your own schedule without the original timestamp.

This morning I received the following text messages from Flanagan:
  • 8:41am: Since this just sent, we're actually at mile 651: Walker Pass with some trail angels.  Good times.  Love you!
  • 8:42am: Not much signal, but tried to call just cause.  We're safely at mile 631, shooting for Kennedy Meadows Monday.  Love you lots!!

Hmmm...  I think you kept the 8:42am message in the "cloud" for a day or two before delivering.  Let's work on this, m'kay?

Hugs,
Becca

P.S.  Cyber-spotting!  Flanagan is in Muk Muk's photo from the trail angel stop with ice cream sandwiches at Walker Pass.

Day 32, mile 500+

Friday, May 24, 2013
Leg 7: Agua Dulce / Hiker Heaven to Highway 58 crossing, California
Overnighting: Tylerhorse Canyon

COMMAND CENTRAL UPDATE . . .

We've heard the Andrews will be hiking about 20 miles each day, but have you wondered how that averages out?  What are the highs and lows?  Lucky for you, Flanagan is wearing his fitbit, which tracks his steps, elevation gain (in flights of stairs), level of exertion, and so much more.  Enjoy the following graphs of the boys' first month on the trail.  Click on any picture to see it full-sized.

The hours Flanagan was up and about.  Note that the bars are exclusive of one another.  Let's use May 6 as a standard benchmark for these graphs.  Flanagan was active for 11 hours on May 6 = 3.7 very + 5.2 fairly + 2.1  lightly.  That big dip you see on May 9?  That was the zero day, all day off trail in Big Bear.

Steps per day.  And, yes, you are reading this correctly.  The y-axis lists steps in factors of 10,000.  May 6 has 56,237.  Zero day on May 9 still had over 4,000 steps!

Miles per day.  The "half bars" correspond to resupply / layover days, during which they hiked the morning into town or the evening after getting back on trail.  Benchmarks: May 6 was 28 miles; longest day yet is May 12 with 35.25 miles.

And the height climbed.  May 6 was the peak at 806 floors (approximately 9,675 vertical climb!).

Approximate calories burned.  May 6 was 6005 calories.  Low point on May 9 (zero day) was just under 2650.

Seeing these stats, I'm a little intimidated to go on another backpacking trip with these guys.  Or, on the flip side, if they can do 25+ miles with a  full pack, they should be able to do 8 miles with a double pack... I could backpack without the backpack!

Day 30, mile 508

Wednesday, May 22, 2013*
Leg 7: Agua Dulce / Hiker Heaven to Highway 58 crossing, California
Overnighting: side of trail
Milestone: 500 miles

Another major mile reached: MILE 500!  Only 2,250 to go!

* They pass the 500 mile on this leg, but since they are non-communicato, I estimated the date from the hike schedule.  AND I WAS CORRECT ON GUESSING THE DATE; YAY ME!

Day 28, mile 463

Monday, May 20, 2013
Leg 6: Agua Dulce to Highway 58, California
Overnighting: under an oak tree

The hikers continue on their way without noteworthy updates.

MEANWHILE, BACK AT COMMAND CENTRAL . . .

First "augment box" prepped and shipped to our boys.  The leg between Highway 58 and Kennedy Meadows is __ miles.  The original plan was to complete the leg in six days, so that's the box we sent to a friend for cache drop.  As timing progressed the friend is delivering the cache a day early and the boys will come out two days later than planned.  This turned a six day leg into a nine day leg.  Rather than asking our friends to put together an extra the days of food, we cut their shopping list to a 1# block of cheddar cheese and I pulled together this box yesterday morning.
Packing list for the days:
  • BREAKFAST: granola, powdered milk + water, Odwalla superfood bar
  • LUNCH: tortilla, crackers (Truiscut, Wheat Thins, goldfish), salami or jerky, peanut butter, cheese, muscle milk
  • SNACKS: dried fruit (pear, apple, apricot), chocolate covered nuts & fruit, gorp/trail mix, salty nuts, protein bar, Nature Valley bar, Clif bar, powdered electrolyte drink
  • DINNER: instant starch (rice, mashed potato, couscous), pouch of protein (tuna, salmon, chicken), freeze dried vegetables, flavor (nacho powder, gravy powder, minced garlic, parmesan cheese, etc.), olive oil

Sounds delicious, right?  For you and I -- who take for granted our access to refrigerators and grocery stores -- this may sound bland.  But our Andrews report the food is great and the variation throughout the day is appreciated.

Will it all fit?

Master Packer Becca "testris-ed" everything into a single the flat-rate box!
